George R. Helz is an environmental geochemist and Professor Emeritus of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Maryland. He served for a decade as Director of the Maryland Water Resources Research Center, which promotes research, education and public outreach activities related to water resources throughout Maryland. He has supervised 35 Ph.D. students and 24 M.S. students. Helz is a Fellow of the Mineralogical Society of America and has held an Environmental Science and Engineering Fellowship from the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Allan Cox Visiting Professorship at Stanford University and a Fulbright Scholar Award at the Rudjer Boskovic Institute in Zagreb, Croatia
