My Goldschmidt

Role functions

Details for: Martin Palmer

My first degree was in Chemistry at the University of East Anglia, followed by a PhD working with Harry Elderfield at Leeds University. There then followed post-doc positions at Yale with Karl Turekian, and MIT with John Edmond. My first faculty job was back in the UK at Bristol University, before moving to Southampton University in September 2000. I am currently head of the Geochemistry Research Group that is centered around our plasma mass spectrometry research facility. My research interests are pretty broad and have involved studies of volcanism in collisional and subduction zones, submarine and subaerial geothermal activity, ore deposits, paleoceanography, marine sedimentary processes, river water chemistry, biomineralisation, and sensor development. I have also been involved in applying geochemical techniques to archaeological studies, the sources and impacts of dust in human health, the chemistry of landfills, and the role of metals in the human body released from prosthetic implants. I am married with two boys, and my wife and I enjoy walking and relaxing in the countryside.
