Why do Sphagnum vs non-Sphagnum soils behave differently to iron additions? Is it just a pH effect or something else? David Burdige
Thanks for your question, David! We believe it is related to the higher iron reduction rate in the Sphagnum than non-Sphagnum soils, due to more amorphous forms of iron hydroxides and more active iron-reducing microbial communities (shown by high-sequencing DNA analysis) in the Sphagnum soils. pH is probably not the most important factor as the Sphagnum soil is not the most acidic one in our sample set.
