In order to quantify the chemical weathering intensity, a lot of indexes were developed including CIA, CIW, PIA, WI, WR, among which the concentration of CaO is difficult to estimate. This is a very interesting and important research. My questions is by applying this new index, how can we interpret the chemical weathering stages like from weak to strong quantitatively similar to the CIA values?
Thank you for your comment and question. The one of features of the new index is that the value is not influenced by the rock type (mafic/ felsic) of the parent rock. Thus, the new index enables the comparison of samples from different source rock composition. Good correlations were found between the new index and previous indices applied to the samples with different degrees of weathering. The value of the new index ranges from 0 to 100. The value of fresh igneous rock is around 0, less weathered samples in cold or dry climates are around 20, and strongly weathered samples developed in tropical rainforests are around 80.
