Great work! Really enjoyed your presentation. My question is about the crystal growth rate. If the growth rate of crystals slows down while the nucleation rate stays constant, will there be a kink at the CSD as observed?
Hi Boda! Thanks very much for your question. Changes in growth rate should affect the curvature of the CSD, whereas the kink is more reflective of a change in the nucleation rate. Kinks may also be introduced by processes like annealing and aggregation, but especially in the case of crystal-poor erupted magmas, we don't think this is the dominant process. Bruce Marsh (1988, 1998) discusses the effects of changes in nucleation and growth rates on shapes of CSDs in depth, so I would recommend giving those a read.
